This drawing of Polypodium aurem (the hare's foot fern) uses two types of tonal variation of the foliage to create a sense of light and transparency; a tonal increase following an increase in illuminance and a tonal decrease following the increased attenuation of light due to overlapping. The natural forms are placed within the equilateral triangle grid and on close inspection reveal it by sharp tonal changes.
